The monument was built in 1976, on the centenary of Stefan Karadja’s hanging. The architect Belcho Petrov made the architectural design while the sculpture and the reliefs were made by Nikola Terziev and Georgi Radulov.
The bronze statue stands on a quadrangle granite pedestal, with bas-reliefs around it depicting the glorious struggle of the Bulgarian people against their oppressors.
